YouTube & Beauty

May 2, 2014 by emily 87 Comments

I’ve been saying forever that I want to start doing video tutorials on my blog, but to be totally honest, I’m scared to put myself out there in that way! Like pretty much every other girl out there, I stay up way later than I should watching everything from Cara, of the blog Maskcara, highlight and contour to Mr. Kate, doing the perfect sock bun.  How do they make everything look so easy?!

When I try to film mine in my bathroom I look like, well.. a girl in her bathroom filming on her computer. It’s not good. So, thats where I need YOUR help! For all of you that have done the “YouTube” thing, what am I doing wrong? Is there something I need to invest in that will make this whole thing much easier? Give me all your tips!

In the meantime here are some of my favorite YouTube channels:

Maskcara

Jaclyn Hill

Mr. Kate

Elle Fowler

MMandLShow

Kandee Johnson

Who are your favorites? What do you like about them? What kind of things would you like me do?  Let me know in the comments!

My favorite YouTube vlogger is MakeupByTiffanyD. She is mature, southern, with great taste and does videos on more than just beauty but also fashion and home decor. You would love her! She is great at posting on a very regular basis with a variety of video topics and supplements all her videos with blog posts throughout the week with more in depth reviews and pictures.

One trick to good videos is a quality camera and the lighting. Getting some professional lighting to brighten up your face or filming facing a window helps a lot with making things like higher quality. Good luck! Would love to see video tutorials or reviews from you!

I would love to watch you on YouTube. I don’t do videos but I know most of the girls talk about how you should have a good camera and lighting. Try looking up videos about those things to give you an idea. But, I love watching “Get Ready With Me”, “Monthly Favorites”, “Skin Care” and tutorials for different makeup looks, just to throw you some ideas! I am so excited, I cannot wait to watch! 🙂

Mmandl of course because they give the best tips and arent afraid to be real! Its like chatting with a girlfriend when i watch their videos, and they are SO FUNNY! They are not afraid to step out of the box. I love their little tidbits of life in general, and being a woman and friend. Oh and i Also love their healthy lifestyle videos!
I also love Lisalisad1, she is southern as well and her videos are usually long but i find myself fasicnated with what she has to say. Usually i skip over the ramblings of youtubers but not hers. She has the best style too, so classy yet edgy and modern. She shows a friday haul everyweek and haul videos are my fav, its like window shopping!

My channel is stylebybare and I am uploading my second video as I type ~ Products I have Used Up / Empties. I wear a lot of Towne & Reese and your collection so expect to see some tags! 🙂 Uploading on a consistent basis is the key, May is going to be my month of just cranking it out. You will do great, Emily! I think the best advice would be give true honest product reviews and tips as we know you will. It’s so easy to put out what everyone else is doing, but you have your own unique creative outlook which will be wonderful for you to bring to Youtube! I wouldn’t worry about reviewing something that is too expensive either because we all want our moneys worth and what’s the point of buying 5 okay products if we could have put that all to one really awesome one?! You’re sweet, creative, stylish, and to the point. All excellent qualities for a successful “Youtuber”. Can’t wait to subscribe!

First of all, I think you have everything it takes to make successful beauty videos. You are beautiful, kind, genuine, people look up to you (I know I do), and you have great taste.
All you still need is technical stuff: you should invest in a good camera, you can look up the ones beauty vloggers use. I know the Canon Rebel T3I is very popular. Also, you can invest in those big lamps that can make your lighting better (I guess that’s optional, you can also use natural lighting!). A good quality video is always more enjoyable to watch.
I think that’s all there is to it, really! I am sure you can be very good at it, and I know for sure I will never miss a video of yours. Don’t be scared and just do it, I know you are capable of it.
    Much love xx

Hey Emily!! I think just realness is the best thing on a youtube channel. People will watch because they love you and want to see you and what you do in real life (Geeze did I say You enough?!)
I would rather watch someone in their bathroom counter who may smear their eyeliner and have to clean it up and start over than someone who is fake and just putting on a front. I like some of the tips and products that MML do but I don’t like how they drag out videos with their antics, stick to what you are doing. I don’t mind hearing about what is going on in the persons life or little funny stories while they are showing tips but I just don’t need 20 minutes of giggling through a video my time is limited. I know you would do great and I really hope you do decide to take the plunge and do it!

Hi, Emily! I would watch your videos if you made your own youtube channel. Most girls on youtube started by making pretty easy tutorials not making such big deals about it. The lighting was horrible and the camera was pretty bad. As you go on, you will learn new tricks and tips for every video you put up and it will eventually turn out quite professional. Don’t make such a big deal about it! We care about the tips! Just get a good camera and show us the details, shorten the video as much as you can and make it easy for us 🙂 Also, check out Michelle Phan who is very professional! I don’t know if you have heard about her or not, but she’s very good and her videos are always entertaining. She has a lot of close ups and use a good lightning. The day light is always a good source og lightning 😉 I also love Promise Phan and Kandee Johnson! AndreasChoice is also amazing 🙂 They have amazing tips! But if you want to make professional vieeos, look at Michelle. She has the most pro videos although I love watching all of the channels I’ve mentioned! Don’t be afriad to make mistakes, because I know you will get a lot of views, anyways 🙂 Every girl on youtube had to start somewhere and progress! 🙂 Good luck to you!
Ps: please make videos about your nails and what nail polishes and treatments you use!

I started a beauty channel dedicated to hair tutorial and my own line of clip in hair extensions called Sweet Extensions. My beauty channel is http://www.youtube.com/sarasweetie99. I also started a crafting / DIY channel called Camryn’s Closet. The link for that is http://www.youtube.com/camrynscloset. YouTube can create a lot of great opportunities! The key is to have a HD camera, perfect lighting, and a good video editing software. I would help you with any questions you may have. Just let me know! I’m a WV girl too!

I would subscribe to you, and I am old! I enjoy videos that are short and to the point. That is why Ashley at MakeupTIA and Elle from Elleisforliving are so enjoyable. They don’t babble! I would be very curious to see your makeup routine. How do you do your eyes? What are your top lipsticks? Start with a TAG video. I know it might be a bit rough at first, but I think it is a great idea!

Emily I would love to know how you do it! From the moment you aired in the bachelor, I new I had a friend in you! You’re so sweet, funny, always have kind words and are always classy and shic. I am so glad that you have finally found your man! As for youtubing, just think of it as sitting down with a bunch of girlfriends while drinking tea and have fun 🙂

I’m a YouTube beauty blogger myself and I’ve learned that lighting/camera and showing your fun personality are important! Also, making sure you post at least once a week so that people are always awaiting a new video! Heres my YouTube channel if anyone wants to check it out! http://www.youtube.com/ashleydoniellebeauty

Awww, I would love to subscribe and watch your Youtube videos. I’m not sure if your question has been answered already, but here’s my idea. I only follow one You Tuber every few days or so, but I must say they are good at walking around with their camera and talking to it as if you are right there with them. Maybe practice doing that first. Also, I know there have been times when the you tuber needs to show the viewers something and they have one of the kids, spouse or even the grandparents hold the camera. I would imagine there must be some type of tripod that would work for your makeup demonstrations…maybe have the camera face the mirror. You could have a couple channels…one for makeup…one for family life…etc. You’d have tens of thousands…if not millions of subscribers. 🙂 †
    P.S. Congratulations on your marriage!!

I would love a really good tutorial on makeup for hooded eyes, as well as how to keep eye shadow from looking so muddy. I’m guessing it has to do with clean brushes when blending? Oooh! And one about how to find best lip, eye, cheek colors for different skin types! OH! And how to find perfect red lip for each person! That’s it. For now. 😉

I have loved you and Michelle Money since your days on the Bachelor together and can’t get enough. You ladies are so stylish, beautiful and full of life. I met the two of you at an 46NYC event a few years back and have been obsessed since (well honestly.. before that day too). I have learned so many hair and makeup tips from MMandL. Not to mention.. dropped some serious cash on their suggested products. Would love to learn more hair and makeup tips from you as well as the products you love and use. Your perfume recommendations have changed my life. Love Tom Ford Black Velvet.

Hi Emily! I have been a TouTube Beauty Blogger for 3 years and I can tell you that 3 things made a difference- good lighting from ring light & cowboy Studio lights, quality camera with autofocus, and consistent uploading schedule. You already have the advantage that you are known and run a successful beauty/fashion blog, so people will automatically tune in. You could start with your computer in a bathroom and trust me, people will watch. If you like how it goes and you find you have time for it, then invest in all the other stuff to take videos to the next level. Bottom line is- you have a lot to give to the beauty world and YouTube viewers will watch you today if you posted in your PJs! So just go for it & see where it takes you!!! Plus with a new baby coming you will be very relatable to all the mothers out there who have experienced the same thing!!! If you’d ever like to check out my channel, it’s Mrslolalynn on YouTube! I’d live to answer any questions I ever can for you! Please take the plunge, we are all ready & waiting!!! Xoxo!
