If there is one thing about getting ready that I hate more than anything, it’s drying my hair. It takes forever, my arm gets tired, I never do it like my stylist, I don’t use the right products.. I mean theres a million other reasons, but assuming you all have hair, you get it.Well when I heard that washing your hair too much was actually BAD, lets just say it could have come from a 5 year old and that would’ve been reason enough for me to stop washing.
And before you freak out and say, “eww thats disgusting,” let me be the first to say that this is not a free pass to not shower. I still shower daily, but I just don’t get my hair wet. On a good week, I’ll wash my hair once or twice and not only has it saved me so much time, but I also think my hair has gotten healthier!
If you’re going to challenge yourself to see how long you can go without washing your hair, the first and pretty much only thing you need is a good dry shampoo. I don’t know how I lived without it for so long! You just spray a little at your roots, wait a couple seconds, and then shake it out. MAGIC! You’re hair looks so fresh and so clean, without the major arm workout!
Agree about good shampoo..i have tried them ALL and have concluded that LOreal on the cheaper end makes the best and Kerastase on the high end is my fave. Both excellent it also comes down to just how dry your hair is..I can go 2-3 days with my hair looking really good. Come the 4th day its time for a shampoo but I know others who need to wash every single day……its quite personal. I haven’t tried the dry shampoos yet but love the idea and will very soon I am sure.
You can write anything you want and I’m still going to Love you.
This girl reminds me of you, especially the ending. What do you think? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3r6udb4LNcw
My sister is a stylist and we only wash our hair twice a week(and that’s on a good week)! We both are “bleachers” and have the healthiest hair due to the lack of washing. Unlike dry shampoo which is awesome, baby powder is our best friend! It take the grease away as well…love it!
Hi Emily! Every time you say you have posted a new blog entry I go and check it out. I have to say, I love how honest and real you are with us! I loved the make up drawer post! Please keep these fun blog posts coming! I hope you are doing well, you inspire me! Elisa
Are there any drugstore brands that you have found to work well?
Great post! I have tried several bad dry shampoos in the past and was turned off by them. I will give these a try! It gets old washing/drying my hair every other day. Appreciate it, love the blog.
I’m with you! Hair health is so important, especially to girls, and especially to blondes since we put our hair through so much more! I actually just did a post on Dry Shampoo last week and surprisingly enough (since I tend to buy only salon products) Dove dry shampoo came out on top for me!

I LOVE dry shampoo.. I don’t know what I’d do without it 🙂 I’ll have to try these!

Hello! I think that there are several options to dry shampoo! I like bed head brand as well has if your looking for a cheaper option there is sauave brand at target or walmart that you can normally find two cans for right around $5. I also like Kenra’s blow drying spray for when you do wash your hair, it helps a great deal to help dry your hair faster!! =)
Any thoughts on products for hair loss, due to stress?
Thanks!! I have been looking for a better dry shampoo. I will totally try one of these out! Love you and your new blog!
I wish there was a way you could post a demo video. I’d like to see what you mean by “shake it out”. do you flip your hair upside down? also, when you do wash your hair, what shampoo do you recommend? I love that you started this website!
Thank you! I wash my hair every other day & it looks so dirty so fast! I’m going to try this dry shampoo. I need my healthy hair back after getting two perms…yea its falling apart!
I have been doing this for over 30 years. I wash my hair about every 4 days. It not only helps save your hair from damage but your scalp as well. There are some very good dry shampoos out if you need one but I never use them…just never needed it…
First of all I love you and your style! I wash my hair everyday and I know it’s so bad. But I work out and run every day and my hair gets gross! Any suggestions? Still use these products? Thanks, Stacie
ORIBE DRY TEXTURE IS MY FAVORITE!!! Can’t live with out it.
Hi ! How long does the Oribe last you using it 5-6 times per week?
Thanks!
I have fine, blonde hair and it gets so oily after 24 hours. I’ve never tried to go more than 2 days between shampoos. Is your hair fine too? I can see this working on thicker, dark hair. Thanks!
Great tip but maybe you could recommend high end as well as bargain products. Not everyone can afford to spend 40$ on dry shampoo.
Emily,
Have you considered doing a blog about home decor? What we have seen of your lovely home, you appear to have great taste. I know I like it! I think a lot of young mothers (especially those on a budget) would love knowing how you decorate your home while keeping it warm, loving, and comfortable for Ricki. That is so important when you have young children. They need to be happy and feel safe in their surroundings.
You have a great relationship with your followers, and I think blogging about your decorating tips and what good bargains are out there would be a hit.
I know it’s not good to wash your hair very often, but what if you work out? Does the dry shampoo trick still work?
Can you still use the dry shampoo or still not wash your hair after you workout??? I teach dance twice a week and try to work out 2 more, my hair is disgusting after that, so i HAVE to wash it!
My hair got a lot healthier when I started washing it less. I noticed that when I shampooed daily, it dried my hair out and created split ends. Great advice! LOVE your style 🙂
It’s so hard for me NOT to wash my hair. I feel like it gets greasy and lifeless. I will have to try out one of these dry shampoos. Thanks for sharing Emily! : )

Yes! Discovering dry shampoo was the best thing ever! I’m a college student so staying up all night makes it hard to want to get up early to wash my hair. Genius 😉

Do you still style your hair after you use dry shampoo? I use it as well, but find that my hair is SUPER weird after I sleep on it. I would love some how-tos! Thanks!

Oribe is amazing and the smell is to die for! I love Kenra dry shampoo too!
@KALLIE
Oscar Blandi Pronto dry shampoo spray is $23 for the full size and $11 for the travel size. It is AMAZING and easy on the wallet! Lasts a long time too :o)
I love the humor in all your posts Emily! 🙂 I always tell my friends I only wash my hair 1-2 times per week max and they look at me like I harmed an innocent animal. What they don’t know is they’re doing more damage than me! I love my dry shampoo and like you, can’t believe I have lived without it for so long! I have tried so many different kinds, but honestly, the best one to date is actually Suave Professionals, for only $3!

I have to say, as a new mom and chronically-in-a-rush teacher, I have tried many different dry shampoos, both expensive and cheap. My favorite by far is Lush’s No Drought dry shampoo. It is not a spray, but spray makes my dark hair look gray anyway! I just sprinkle it out, dip a makeup brush in it, and swipe over my roots. I love the smell, and it NEVER shows on my almost black hair! I LOVE it, the bottle lasts forever, and it’s only about $15!!!!
Please do a blush post soon Emily!! I just bought the YSL lip colors and I love them 🙂
thank you
Thanks, Emily, for this hair tip! I damaged my hair by washing it almost everyday. I heard about dry shampoo but never tried it. You just convinced me to give it a try!
I have tried the Tresseme one and had terrible experience with it and swore off dry shampoo all together. But your post has made me reconsider.

So there’s this boy who has this major (not crazy, but just major) crush on this girl who has never spoken to him, and they have never made eye contact. He sends her notes to let her know this somewhat, and some she shares with her “friends” and some I think she keeps close to her heart. (She has this amazing gift of discernment.) Anyway, he had this thought today, “What if I were to open the door one day and she was standing right there with the most beautiful smile he has always observed?” He knew he couldn’t let her speak first, because he would just melt right there at the sound of her heavenly voice. Overcome with her adorable eyes – his could not leave hers. His heart would be beating out of his chest, but she couldn’t tell. Instead of freaking out – because he wasn’t wearing skinny jeans or leather pants, the answer came to him when he remembered the importance of breathing. Just say, “Hi”, and ask her, “Would you like to go out for a Chick Fil-A ice cream cone?” Can you help me improve this?
Thank you for the post Emily!! I love checking your blog everyday:) You are absolutely gorgeous and of course I want to know all of your style/beauty secrets 🙂
Snacking ( 10 minutes) is one workout. Love – within the marital covenant.
Love it!! I’ve tried tons of dry shampoos as well, I love:

I second all the questions about working out. What if you get super sweaty in the gym? I workout 6 days a week but would love to try the dry shampoo if it works!
I am a hairdresser and have tried a million dry shampoo’s over the years, and I have to say my favorite one is Suave dry shampoo. I know it sounds crazy, but it is only $3 and better than all of the expensive ones I have tried!
YES! Love me some dry shampoo – and for everyone who was wondering, it’s still really good when you work out every day!
I teach aerobics as my job and only wash my hair twice a week. After my super sweaty sessions I blow dry the sweat out of my mostly dry hair, then dry shampoo and I’m good to go. Something about the mixture of dry shampoo and dried sweat (sorry this sounds so gross), gives it great texture!
My stylistic told me to quit washing my hair every day. I grumbled a bit, but now I wash it every three days, and only with a sulfate free shampoo. I also add baking soda to my shampoo once a month to do a really deep cleanse, and always follow up with a hydrating masque. And I love dry shampoo! I have noticed that if I dry shampoo after a good blow out, even if its clean, it helps keep it looking better longer. Thanks Em!
Do you have any favorite hydrating tips and products for hair? I want my hair to look and feel healthy!
For those of you who can’t break the bank on a dry shampoo, I might have a suggestion. I use Suave’s Dry Shampoo and you can find it at all your local department stores and drug marts. It works wonders for me and I have very thin, fine brown greasy hair. It at least buys me an extra day of no wash and saved me from feeling greasy!
First of all, I love your blog. Thank you so much for sharing. I admire your style so much and I appreciate the effort that comes with producing such a high-quality, relevant blog. Anyway, I also use dry shampoos and I find that as a blonde, I am ok with simple baby powder, too! My other favorites are Suave (it smells very good!) and Oscar Blandi, which smells like lemons.
Please keep the helpful tips coming!
Hi Emily!
I love your blog! I think it would be helpful if you gave a little more detail on each of the products that you recommend. Some of them are on the higher-end price scale (which I don’t think anyone minds!) but it would be nice to know why you like each one so we can make an informed purchase! Also helpful for people who don’t know a lot about sunless tanning, dry shampoos, etc! Can’t wait for more posts!
I am one of the gross ones, who only washes their hair once or twice a week, and I always get people complementing me on my hair… I use a good dry shampoo inbetween! It’s such a great great invention!!
** Emily, I agree with a previous poster, I would also LOVE you to do a segment or a weekly post about your house/décor.. I always loved the episodes when they had shots of your house, I always tried to see what and how you decorate!!!!!!
Heidi
I was the one asking about Ricki’s Shower curtain.. thank you for your reply, first, I was super thrilled you did, I was calling people telling them you had replied LOL!!
but dang it they now discontinued.. when You re do her bathroom, you should pass it forward ahhaha 😉
I read this and decided to try the Suave dry shampoo. Worked great! Thanks for the tip.
Yes Holly, the suave dry shampoo is the best cheapest product I have found. I actually tried it because Michelle Money (also from the bachelor) recommended it in one of her youtube videos. It smells great and isn’t filmy.
I work out 4 days a week, and I still only wash my hair once or twice. That said, I shower daily and live on my dry shampoo. My hair does get gross when I work out. What I’ve found is that if I let my hair “settle down” after a workout and let any sweat dry, then I put the dry shampoo in and it still works amazingly. After a workout I’ll flip my head over and run my towel through it, and I’ll usually not touch it until I’m done getting dressed and my makeup is on.
I’ve used a lot of different brands, however none that she listed in the post but I’m definitely going to try the Oribe.
I’m currently using Psssssst dry shampoo (http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod3900585) but I’ve used the Suave brand, Aveeno brand, TREsemme, you name it. and there’s a nicer product by Kevin Murphy called Fresh Air (http://www.kevinmurphy.com.au/products/styling_productdetail.php?id=16). This is hands down, the BEST one I have ever used. The only reason I’m not using it now is because my stylist is out and another stylist in his salon told me about Pssssst.
Emily, Do you use clip in extensions or do you have them put in. I have been using clip-in’s for years now and have been thinking about having extensions put it. I am so nervous about it because I have heard great things and not so great things. I was wondering what your experience was and if you have any recommendations.. Thanks so much, Jen
Hi Emily! I felt compelled to leave a comment after I read your post about WEN! As a former WV girl myself with limited shopping options, I also saw it on an informercial! I did like it, but eventually found I missed the sudsy feel of shampoo– plus I was going through the bottle so quickly! It wasn’t until years later that I found AG hair products, and I’ve never looked back! I wish someone would’ve told me years ago that even shampoos that are “sulfate free” can still leave your hair feeling dry and gross. The ingredient that is the worst in shampoo is SALT! Yep, plain old table salt. See, lots of manufacturers use table salt as a thickener in shampoos because it’s cheap! So wrong, right!!? Salt is super drying and dehydrating. WEN is salt free, which is probably why you like it so much! AG is salt free, feels luxurious and will change your hair’s life! As a product junkie, I highly recommend it. The products are incredible!
Hey guys!
For anyone who still needs ideas for less expensive dry shampoos please please please try ‘Not Your Mothers….Dry Shampoo’. Not Your Mothers …is a brand you can buy at Walmart, Target, CVS, or any drug store or grocery store for only under $6!!!! All of the brands products are nice but I swear by their dry shampoo. But I will try some of Emily’s suggestions as well! Xoxo
Hi! Just thought I’d give my two cents for anyone looking for a GREAT dry shampoo for darker hair. I had problems in the past with dry shampoos that made my hair look ashy and chalky. My friend is a hair stylist in Chicago, and she first introduced me to this about a year ago! It is called Unite Eurotherapy dry shampoo. I swear everyone needs to try this line and try that dry shampoo. Your life will be changed for the better 🙂
I added links to a couple of products that I have tried from their line. My favorites are the argan oil and 7 seconds conditioner. they are very light products that don’t weigh the hair down 🙂

I think that people have always over washed their hair. I’ve never liked washing everyday so I always used baby powder because the cans from the store I go thru too quickly. I do double cleanse and my hair is less oily. It’s so much easier to let your hair be natural. I also mud mask my hair or overnight in a treatment if I don’t have time to hide out in the house. Takes some dedication but it’s worth it ☺
