BEN NYE BANANA POWDER:ย Camera Ready Cosmetics

Shellac Your Face

June 4, 2013 by emily 49 Comments

I don’t know about you, but when I put my makeup on in the morning I expect it to last for the majority of the day. I don’t think thats too much to ask. However, especially in the summer, I’ll look in the mirror halfway through the day and its like I didn’t even put any on. I’ve tried every kind of setting powder, spray, primer there is and haven’t been all that impressed. I wish there was a way to Shellac your face like you can your nails. Kind of gross, but also kind of awesome. Could you imagine only having to do your makeup once a week??

Ben Nye Banana Powderย is the closest thing to Shellac that I’ve found and since using it I barely even have to touch up throughout the day. Just be careful because it is very drying, so don’t forget to use a good moisturizer. I like to put a little highlighter on my cheekbones after I do a light dusting of this just so it’s a little less matte. And the best part is its under $15.00! ย And if you really want your makeup to last all day, finish with a spray of Urban Decay De Slick Setting Spray!

Thank you for this post! I always feel like my makeup wears off halfway through the day. I will definitely be trying this “face shellac.” I am using a new foundation that is HD photo-smart that I bought at Ulta. This is so far the best makeup I’ve used that actually stays on throughout the day and doesn’t look too greasy. My problem is that I feel like my concealer wears off fairly easy. I apply my moisturizer, then foundation, then concealer, then powder. Do you have any suggestions for good concealers that last for a while? Or a better routine for applying it so that it stays on?

I love this! It will last so so long because you only need a tad bit for your face! I also love the Ben Nye Cameo Powder! Great for under eye setting powder!

I’ve bought so many high end primers and my favorite so far has been philosophy’s primer the present. It really makes my makeup last all day even last week I went to a bday party outside and it outlasted the hot sun!

Great post, thank you for sharing it with your readers. @Lauren, are you using a primer before you apply your foundation? There are a wide selection of concealers available that offer long lasting coverage – Benefit Fake Up Concealer is a great option. A sheer setting powder will help to set the concealer in place without drying out the skin.

Wow! Thanks for sharing this product. I am moving to Texas this summer and have been looking for good products to make my makeup last in the heat and humidity. How do you choose your color? What color do you use?

So funny you posted this because I have had it on my mind lately that I need a way to make my makeup last longer. I feel like I look great at 8 AM after putting on my makeup and then it fades quick. I’ve tried a few primers and couldn’t notice a difference, so I’m interested in this product you mentioned since it sounds like you have high expectations like me. I always hear Laura Mercier has he best primer and I have a friend that swears by it, but I didn’t feel that it worked for my skin.

I completely agree! I’ve tried primers, setting powder, spray and nothing works. It’s bizarre because I have dry/normal skin… One thing that seems to help a little is the urban decay all nighter spray! But ill check this out!
    Thanks!!!

First I just want to say that since I have been reading your blog I have realized that we have a lot of similarities! I loved watching you on the bachelor and bachelorette! I have used every product you could think of to get the best coverage and to make it last! I have discovered the best setting spray I have ever used and I swear by it! It is called model in a bottle and it is the best thing I have used in years!

First I just want to say this, I watched both the bachelor and bachelorette and realized we have a lot of similarities! But you are probably told that all the time! Well one of them is my love for makeup. 8 I was born with a birth mark on the whole side of my face. You cant see a lot of it because my hair obviously covers my the top of my head. But you can see it on my right side of my face and my neck. I have spent years trying to find the best that works for me. I think I have done a pretty good job at finding the best coverage. I have recently stumbled across the best setting spray I have ever used! I have never been able to find something that lasts all day and I hate reapplying my makeup because it jus doesn’t look good after. It is called model in a bottle and I swear by it! Thankyou for taking the time to read my post ๐Ÿ™‚

I agree with that it would be awesome to only have to do your makeup once a week!!! I feel like I have the same problem.. my makeup looks great initially but by hour 5 it has begun to fade and I look like I’m not wearing any blush or bronzer anymore. Do you use Ben Nye in place of a setting powder? Also, how do you apply it (brush wise)? Thanks Emily!

I prefer Mally’s primer it is more expensive but it does not dry your face out. You put on your moisturizer wait a few minutes then put it on. Mally also has a great eye shadow primer that I use as well. Her products are on QVC and often on Easy Pay. I spend way too much on that website especially since WEN products are there too!

I absolutely LOVE e.l.f. Studio Makeup Mist & Set. This stuff is only THREE DOLLARS & I think it works MUCH better than the Urban Decay spray! The e.l.f spray really & truly prolongs the life & look of my makeup, even in the Tennessee humidity & heat! I love it!

I love to set my under eye area and around my nose and mouth with the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder. Its kind of mysterious how it work. It creates such a smooth look and doesn’t move throughout the day. I recommend it! Thanks for sharing the Ben Nye! I am going to pick some up for myself and give it a try. I know I’ve heard that it is what Kim K’s makeup artist uses!

I love the Ben Nye Banana Powder. Its an incredible highlighter. I also use Ben Nye Neutral Set after I apply my foundation, before I use the Banana Powder. It’s crazy white but DOES NOT look white on the skin, it is translucent. I live in AZ and I found this powder to be the best at staying put! I also use the Ben Nye Final Seal spray. It’s super cheap and works better than the name brand cosmetics.

Ordered this a couple of weeks ago after your post and am LOVING it!!! I was using Makeup Forever’s HD setting powder and while I liked it, I hadn’t realized how much it was white-washing my face, especially in photos. The Ben Nye is awesome. If anyone is on the fence about trying it, just do it! The price is great too.

I just bought the Ben Nye Banana powder because of reading your post, and although i like the way it goes on so smoothly….and the color is good, i STILL find myself getting greasy by mid afternoon and have to dab kleenex to get the extra grease off. so kinda dissapointed…..was hoping it would keep my makeup from melting off like every other powder i’ve tried. BUT, it is still nice to use because the texture is very fine and light.

I bought this product after reading Emily’s review, and the others who posted their responses. This product was cheap, it arrived quickly, and Oh god is this product amazing. I work 8-5 and by the time I would get in my car after work and look in the rear view mirrow I would cringe. Half my make-up melted off and my face didn’t have that perfect matte finish I spent so long perfecting in the morning. I LOVE THIS PRODUCT. I have fair-medium skin and the Banana color was perfect fit for me. Hope you guys try it too

Where can I find this in Canada? I feel that the Ben Nye/products made for theatre are always so much better than what we can get commercially and so much cheaper. Because that makeup is make for functionality.
