What I Wore: try something new! edition

July 11, 2013 by emily 37 Comments

Do you ever look at what someone else is wearing and think, “Thats so cute, but I could never pull it off!”? Well, guess what? You can! I always try to live by the rule that as long as you feel good, you’ll look good. And even if you look like a hot mess, you still feel like a babe on the inside so who cares?

neonpants

With all that said, I know that the words “neon”, “crop top”, and “wide leg pants” can send most women running for the hills! Well since this post is all about trying something totally new, I decided to put all three dreaded words into the same outfit and it turned out to be one of my favorites!  The high waist of the BCBG pants make the Mara Hoffman crop top much more “Kate Hudson Bohemian Chic” than “Britney Spears circa 1998”, right?

And a huge thanks to KK Bloom in Charlotte for helping me take a risk in fashion!

What’s a trend you’re dying to try but are too nervous? Leave it in the comments!

I love it when fashion risks end up being one of my favorite outfits to wear! I would have never guessed that a wide leg pant with a crop top would work so well. Great job pulling it off! My item that I always get so nervous to wear is high waisted jean shorts. I just can’t seem to make the transition, but I love seeing other people wear them!

    Hi Emily,

Your outfit is absolutely adorable, and I love the crop top, but where did you get your necklace from? I’ve never seen anything like that before and am very interested. 🙂 I hope you enjoy the rest of your day and be blessed.

    Thank you!

It is a GORGEOUS outfit and fits you like a glove! But to me, it is absolutely NUTS to spend over 200 $ for this top! It’s down (in CAN$) to 213 $ from… 282 $! for less than a metre of fabric… It’s a tiny bit of beeding, a frock that costs dollars to make. Yikes.

    Hi Emily,
I absolutely LOVE everything about this outfit especially that necklace 😉
I am definitely gravitating towards different clothing pieces and colors and stepping out of my comfort zone. You just never know what you will end up liking 🙂

The trend I want to try is statement necklaces but I have the worst time matching them with earrings. What’s the best way to do this? Buy the pieces together or just do one or the other?

Head to toe… Love it all! I think when your a mature women and not sixteen the only way to wear the crop tops is with a high waisted skirt/pants/shorts, it turns something that could be trashy into something classy and fun. Emily, the necklace is unusual and reasonable good work!

Girl, you have out done yourself with your new jewerly line. I purchased my first piece late on Tuesday night before it was made official that it was up and running. I ordered the Leela necklace and received it this afternoon. I was blown away when I put it on. Can’t wait to wear it when I go out tonight (even if I end up just going to the grocery store). I also love the attention to detail you gave to the packaging. I’m definitely keeping the pouch and box that it came in because it’s too nice to throw away! I’ve also just ordered the Kate necklace and am psyched to get it. Can’t wait to see what else you’ll bring to light in the future.

Emily, thanks for this fun inspiration! You’re so right and I’ve found that stepping out of my comfort zone often ends up in really fun outfits! (Along with a few “hot messes”:) You’re spot on with the Kate Hudson look. I’m short so wide leg pants like yours scare me, but I’ve been dying to try them! Maybe I will now! Thanks for this great post! Love your fun, classy style!

    Emily,
I love the outfit you chose to wear for this shoot. It is definitely bold and fun. I just wish this outfit was more affordable. How’s a struggling college kid suppose to afford a $138 crop top? Do you have any dupes that are more affordable?
    Thanks,

This is by far one of my favourite outfits you’ve posted, and usually I pretty much despise neon! I love the effortless look of the pants without any buttons or zippers in the front. The pair you posted as an alternative have a zipper, are there any others that you know of that look a little more like the ones you are wearing? Also, any alternative tank options similar to the one you’re wearing that might be a little more affordable for us struggling college students/fashionistas?!
    Thanks!
