Mason Pearson Brush, Neiman Marcus

Mason Pearson Brush.. Worth Eating Ramen Noodles for a Year?

September 9, 2013 by emily 32 Comments

By now you may have heard of the legendary Mason Pearson hairbrush and wondered, “Who in the WORLD would pay that much for a brush??” Well let me tell you.. it’s worth EVERY penny. This is one of the very few items that actually live up to its hype.

If you only have one hair brush this should be it. Seriously. My dad (men love it too!) had one growing up and I’d always sneak in his bathroom and steal it. Needless to say, the day I moved out it “accidentally” ended up in one of my boxes and I’ve used it everyday since (I finally bought him a replacement last year for Christmas). If the fact that I’ve had my Mason Pearson brush for 15+ years doesn’t tell you something, I don’t know what will.

One of the things I love about it most is that it  lets me go longer in between washing my hair. It redistributes the oil from your scalp through the shaft of your hair, making your roots less greasy and your ends more moisturized. If you like to blow dry your hair straight, I swear this will cut your work in half!

I know it’s crazy expensive, but you’ll have it for a lifetime. Ever since Ricki was little she called it the “no-ouch brush” since it’s the only one that detangles without her running out of the room in tears. (*Sidenote- is there a kids game I don’t know about that involves seeing who can get the most tangles in their hair? My kid has to win, for sure.)  With all that said, if you’re not ready to make the commitment, try the smaller pocket brush and see how you like it. I guarantee you’ll be going back for the full size!

This truly is the best brush! I remember spotting it in In-Style magazine when I was in 4th grade and begging my mom to buy it for me.

It quickly ended up in her drawer…and now at the age of 24 I’m ready to get my own again 🙂

My grandson, age 10, has gorgeous hair that any woman or girl would love to have, but hates to brush his hair. He complains constantly that brushing his hair hurts especially when his mother or I try to brush his hair. I didn’t see a website to order a brush from Mason Pearson so I am going to goggle it and go from there to find him a brush. Thanks, Emily or I should say my grandson thanks you in advance. Will let you know if I am successful…..no more tears? Hopefully!

I recently bought the same brush as this but a different brand and it definitely works by distributing the oils in the hair and making my hair less greesy looking around the crown! I will never use a different brush!! 🙂

Oh my goodness!!! I just got this brush a few months ago and I absolutely love it! I got the junior mixture brush. It is perfect for my hair and I agree, it really is the BEST hairbrush ever! I was browsing through facebook and I saw your picture of the hairbrush, so I just had to come here to hear your thoughts on it. I’m so glad that you love it!

I adore this brush, I absolutely cannot live without it. My grandparents actually gave my sister this for Christmas one year, I have had mine for 10 years and it is still in perfect condition! For something you use everyday, it makes the price worth it.

Another brush that I love is The WET Brush. I bought mine on Ebay for $10 and it is a total game changer. It really detangles your hair wet or dry and if I use it to blow-dry my hair I don’t need to straighten it. A good alternative for cheap, until it breaks then I will probably splurge and get this one! Thanks

I went to the website and there are many variations. What size and style do you use on Ricki’s hair? She and my grandson are almost the same age. Thanks.

You can use any of them on children. The pocket size would be great though!

Hey Emily! Wondering do you think the pocket size would be ok to use for thin/fine hair? About shoulder length.

Emily I love your blog and love (and own) most of the products you put up so please keep them coming! And for those that can’t afford or just can’t justify spending $170 on a brush, Sonia Kashuk for Target came out with a dupe awhile ago that gives you pretty much the exact same benefits and only costs $15. Most people actually prefer the SK one over the MP brush… Hope this helps!

For anyone looking for a more affordable dupe for this brush, try out the Wet Brush. It’s ten bucks on Amazon and it’s a life saver!

I don’t own a Mason Pearson Brush… yet (maybe for Christmas? Never too early to dream!). But I do own a Mason Pearson Comb ($29 at Nordstrom y’all). I have very fine and thin hair that tangles easily and at 24, I’ve had a TON of hair loss! This comb has made my life so much easier and drastically reduces hair loss. I’m so happy with it. It goes with me everywhere. I probably need to get a second one as a backup! 🙂

I have to say, I bought a good amount of the products you recommend and they are all perfect. Emily’s website is like hidden treasure! Now this may be a totally stupid question, but can you use this with hair extensions?

I have been wanting one forever, but have not yet because of the price. I think I’m just going to suck it up and take the plunge because everyone recommends them so highly. I just won’t be able to tell my boyfriend about the hefty price tag ever lol!

I bought both Oribe products you recommended and the YSL combo, and I absolutely love them! You’re probably one of the only people I trust to recommend beauty products…definitely willing to eat ramen for this brush! Thanks, Emily! :))

You should try the Wet Brush…it is much less expensive and works just as well. As a hairdresser I have tried them all and I can honestly say the Wet Brush works just as well as the Mason Pearson and is a fraction of the cost. I keep one in the car, my bag, my daughters backpack….

I would suggest the denmans brushes for a product very similar but with a much smaller price tag! The natural boar bristle brush has the same effect distributing oils through your hair

    No it’s not worth it.

I’m a hairdresser and the brush yes is great but it’s not worth it.

Denman makes the exact same brush for less than 30 and lasts forever. Comes in all sizes as well.
