Meet The Newest Member Of Our Family: Nash Johnson

April 8, 2014 by emily 95 Comments

One could say I have a lot going on right now.. planning a wedding, getting married, selling my house, buying a new house, running a blog, a jewelry line, on top of my everyday responsibilities of being a mom and everything I’m involved in through my community. Yikes. Don’t get me wrong, every single one of those things are such a blessing and I’m so thankful that they’re all “good stresses”. However, adding another animal to our zoo was pretty much at the bottom of the to do list. I guess the saying, “when it rains, it pours” really is true!

When I came home from church on Sunday Tyler surprised me with this sweet puppy that he found out in the middle of nowhere in South Carolina. My reaction was a mix of, “Have I been drugged? There’s no way he’s serious and there’s actually a dog in my driveway,” to “He’s cute, but when are his owners going to be here to pick up him because he’s not staying with us.” His fur was matted with goodness knows what, you could see every bone in his body, and you could tell his poor paws were in bad shape as well. We would be a perfect foster family for him until we could find someone to take him!  Well, somewhere between giving him his first bowl of food, his first vet visit, and an (expensive) trip to Petsmart, we bonded. His monogrammed “Nash” bed will be here next week and we’re officially WAY out numbered by animals, but (as I’m trying to remind myself daily!) what fun is life without a little bit of chaos? 🙂

PS– Does anyone have any guesses as to what kind of dog he could be? Anyone done the blood test that tells you? Let me know in the comments!

A good way to tell is by the dogs markings. I’ve had a Rottweiler/ German Shepard mix that looked a lot like Nash, with the brown above the eyes and the brown paws and chest. Dobermans also have similar markings which is the dog I have now. Definitley a mix of something and my guess would be between a Rottweiler, German Shepard, and possibly a doberman. All “bully breeds” , but I’ve had ever kind of dog I just listed and they’ve all been sweeties. I don’t believe in bully breeds, if you train any dog right they will be great dogs 🙂 hope you find out what breed Nash is!

Congratulations to you and your family on the new addition! He looks so precious and is a very lucky guy to have found his forever home with you. Just by his pictures I would guess he is a labrador/shepherd mix or possibly labrador/rottweiler. I would put my money on the lab/shepherd though. I’m a research scientist as well as a HUGE dog lover so I can tell you from experience that none of the current “breed tests” actually work very well. The biomarkers that differentiate different breeds just aren’t separated enough at this point to give an accurate read. They are relatively inexpensive though and it might be fun for you guys to help guess what Nash is but I wouldn’t put too much stock into what the results tell you.

Looks like our German Shepard when he was a pup looks he could be a mix of something else. Don’t let anyone tell you he is a bully mix it’s all in how you treat him. Our German Shepard is the biggest sweetheart just give him lots of love and set boundaries he will be great no matter what mix he is. Good Luck!

I’ve done the genetic test to find out the breed – twice! We did it on a puppy that we adopted to get a bit of an idea of how big he would be, and what kind of training he might need. I firmly believe that all dogs can be sweet dogs, if raised and trained properly. I would recommend it! One of ours turned out to be a Collie and Golden Retriever, and the other is a Lab and Cairn Terrier mix!

I work at a pet hospital and we do DNA testing for pets. We take some blood and send it out and you get back a family tree type thing going back to their great-grandparents I believe. It will also tell you other breeds that could have been in their line of DNA before. It’s pretty cool!

I rescued a puppy from the shelter in January. She was one of nine puppies that someone threw off a bridge in the icy cold. Thank goodness the bag got caught on a tree and someone found them and brought them to the shelter. I did the Wisdom Panel 2.0 Saliva Test. It was pretty easy, inexpensive (around $65), and you get your results in 2-3 weeks. Our puppy Sadie, looks very similar to a yorkie, but ended up being miniature poodle, manchester terrier, and border collie mix. Looks can be deceiving, lol. The test also predicts their adult weight. Again, a little bigger than what we predicted. I hope you enjoy Nash and be sure to post when you find out his breed 🙂

I did some research on the test, and came across a pretty good article about a guy who used two different tests and got two different results, so I am not sure how entirely accurate they are. Definatley looks like he has rottie, which is one of the most loyal breeds you will ever meet.

I would def say ROTTWEILER because of the face. The color is also rottweiler and German shepherd. You can tell a lot about a dog’s size by the PAWS. If the paws are big, it’s going to be a big dog and perhaps more German shepherd than lab. Hair dogs like labs/rottweilers shed a lot. Furry dog hair like German shepherds looks more fluffy and coarser. I would say this dog is 80% rottweiler. Which is great because Ricki will need a body guard when she turns 12. hahaha!

I have a pure bred Lab that looks exactly like Nash. Of the litter of 9 pups, two were colored like this. It is not uncommon for Labs to have miss-marked coloring due to recessive genes. It usually occurs when a Chocolate is bred to a Black. Chocolate is a recessive gene in itself, so crazy things can happen. Google “tan point lab” and you will see the color markings.

Incidentally, my lab Maggie, was bred in the middle of nowhere South Carolina, so they may be related. If so, you have yourself a good one. enjoy

To the Emily asking about animal shelters, be prepared to take a doggie home if you go to one because it’s heartbreaking to see their sad faces behind the cages! Emily, You’re doing a great thing by taking this puppy in..the animal shelters are overcrowded. Are you rebuying in Charlotte? I live near you (I won’t mention the development for privacy reasons) but this area is beautiful..I can’t image you would leave it!! OH GOOD LORD. Let me just tell you that you are in for a lot of work. I have 3 dogs, and never did I think I would have 3. I had 1 Pomeranian for 8 years, and then I got married and we bought a mini American eskimo. And then, last spring I managed to get talked into fostering a 3 week old, 2 pound mutt. After waking up every 2 hours to feed & poop him, for 3 weeks straight, I decided there’s no way I can give him away after I just put so much work and effort into him. A year later, he’s the best thing in my life (don’t tell my husband)…but, let me tell you, 3 dogs is a lot of work, especially since 2 of them are only 9 months apart. It’s like having 2 toddlers running around my house. Plus, we have 2 cats already. It literally is a zoo. Anyways, we went to Banfield vet (inside Petsmart) and got that blood test done for $75. 3 weeks later the results came back…my little angel is American Staffordshire Terrier (fancy word for Pitbull), Bull Terrier (Target dog), and Lab. I’d def recommend the test. Now, if I could just keep him from eating my shoes, and keep my husband from getting jealous of me spooning the dog instead of him!

My husband did the same thing to me, but there were TWO puppies, a boy & a girl!:-) Both were like Nash, see their ribs, full of ticks & pitiful!:( never know it now! Took care of them for 4 months til we found the perfect homes for them! Can’t say enough about ppl who take “stray” animals in, you have a big heart!:-) so happy to see that sweet face in such a loving home…you rock Emily 🙂

Just wait till he grows into his head and feet. Bet he will be pretty good size and looks like some kind of shepherd mix. Nice dog, all of them.
Just remember you should be happy and healthy with all those pets. They say a dog will help you live longer.
Good to see you truly happy and praying God’s blessings on you and family today, tomorrow, and in your future.

You are beautiful on the outside and in!! Bless you & your family for saving this sweet, adorable baby!! Rescue stories like yours melt my heart. I found my last fur baby in the middle of the road, too; skin & bones and very sick. He’s the biggest love bug ever. I really think animals like that know that you saved their life. He’ll be forever grateful to you 🙂

Oh boy what a full house you have! We have two dogs and three cats and a guinea pig at our house. But we love it! Pets make life fun and are great for kids to learn responsibility and unconditional love.

I just saw The Bachelor here in Sweden (from 2011, we seem to be a bit behind you 😉 and then I discovered you. I just have to say that you seem to be such a sweet and lovable person. Congratulations and best of luck to everything going on in your life Emily! 🙂

If I had to guess, I would definitely say that your little guy is a mix of Rottie and Shepard. The majority of his markings are Rottie, but his little nose is a Shepard nose. He is beautiful and I am glad that he has found you and your family.

He is definitely Rottweiler but could be a mix. My friend had one and he looked so much like your precious Nash!

Hopefully you tried to find Nash’s owner and had him scanned for a chip.

Very often dogs that go missing end up in homes that adopt them (which is good) but there needs to be a thorough check for an owner first.

If he is not a ‘missing’ pup, so glad you were able to give him a home.

Those eyes are so soulful! I have a full blood Rottie and he has those same eyes. He weighs 128 pounds and is 8 years old! He has a gentle spirit and a huge heart and would never hurt a flea! Seriously! This dog is precious! I’m proud of you and I know they can be a pain in the neck while they are puppies, but they make excellent life partners! Love your man…he’s hot! You make a beautiful couple and I wish you all the happiness in the world!

    hey emily! we actually got a puppy in january that looks almost exactly like nash, right down to the white fur on his chest! our oliver is a black lab / rottweiler / hound mix. nash looks like he has the rottweiler markings. i would check to see if his paws are webbed to determine if he has any lab in him! the shape of his face suggests that he might be part lab, too. i’m no expert, but i’m guessing oliver and nash are similar in their breeds. 🙂 enjoy your new puppy! if you’re interested in comparing the breeds, i have an entire instagram hashtag dedicated to oliver here: http://followgram.me/tag/allaboutoliver {yes, i’m obsessed. but i know you won’t judge me because you love your animals, too 🙂 }
